- An automatic litter box may reduce manual scooping, but it still needs emptying, cleaning and maintenance.
- Before buying one for a small apartment, measure the complete setup, including the space needed to remove the waste drawer, open the machine and lift out its parts.
- Check where you would wash and dry those parts, especially if your bathroom is small. For an owner who struggles with lifting or bending, the weight and accessibility of the components may matter more than an app or cleaning schedule.
- The box must also suit your cat.
- Check the manufacturer’s size, weight and age restrictions, operating instructions and safety information rather than relying only on online reviews. A compact exterior does not necessarily mean there is enough usable room inside, and an older cat may struggle with a raised entrance.
- Keep a familiar tray available during the transition and observe whether your cat uses the new box comfortably. Cats with reduced mobility benefit from easily accessible litter trays, so discuss their needs with your vet before choosing a machine.
