Which Hamster Is Easiest to Keep in a Small Apartment?
For many first-time owners, a Syrian hamster is the easiest of the three to handle gently because it is larger. A Dwarf hamster may also become comfortable with patient handling, while a Roborovski is very fast and often better enjoyed by watching it. All three still need a large enclosure.

The easiest choice for most beginners
A Syrian hamster is often the simplest choice if you hope to interact with your pet. Its larger size can make gentle handling easier, and it must live alone. It will still need patience, a large enclosure, deep bedding and a suitably sized wheel.
What about a Dwarf hamster?
A Dwarf hamster is smaller and quicker, but many can become comfortable with gentle, patient handling. It can live alone happily. Its small body does not mean you can use a small cage: plan for at least 100 × 50 cm of floor space.
What about a Roborovski?
A Roborovski is fascinating to watch as it explores, digs and forages. It is exceptionally fast and usually less suited to regular handling. Choose one if you would enjoy observing its behaviour without expecting it to sit in your hands. ## ## The space test
Before choosing any hamster, measure where a properly sized enclosure will go. All three need ample floor space, deep bedding, hides and a solid wheel suited to their size. They are active in the evening and at night, so also consider where the enclosure can sit without disturbing your sleep.
