What Helped Stop Your Rabbits Destroying the Carpet?

My rabbits dug at and chew carpet in a rented home/

We would like to hear about barriers, floor coverings, digging boxes and changes to the rabbits' usable living space.

What did you try that failed, and did the rabbits start chewing the replacement material?

The most useful starting point is to protect the favourite digging spot and give your rabbits somewhere suitable to dig. Digging is natural behaviour, so simply removing one damaged patch may lead them to another.

Try a roomy digging box filled with hay or suitable shredded paper. You can hide a small portion of their usual pellets in it to encourage exploring. Place it near the area they repeatedly target.

Block access to exposed carpet edges and corners. Any floor protection should lie securely, with no loose backing or edges they can chew. Check underneath furniture too—those hidden corners can be particularly tempting.

Also review their space, exercise, foraging opportunities and rabbit companionship. Persistent carpet digging can reflect frustration or an unmet need, rather than a shortage of shop-bought toys.

Remove damaged materials if they are swallowing fibres. A sudden behaviour change, especially with reduced appetite or signs of discomfort, deserves veterinary advice.

RWAF explains that rabbits need an outlet for digging and that repeated carpet digging can be associated with frustration, inadequate enrichment, lack of companionship or ill health.
