Can You Keep a Bird in a Studio With an Open Kitchen?

I’m considering keeping a pet bird in a studio apartment where the kitchen and living area share the same room. I’m trying to understand how bird owners manage cooking, cleaning and the bird’s time outside the cage in an open-plan space.

If you keep a bird in a studio, how have you arranged the room and your daily routine?

What would you check before bringing a bird home, and what questions did you ask an avian vet?

Please share your experience so others can think through the setup carefully.

Inspect the apartment from floor level before allowing your ferrets to explore. Work through one area at a time, looking for accessible gaps, damaged furniture, loose materials and routes behind appliances or into spaces you cannot easily reach.

Pay particular attention to entrance doors and places where someone might unknowingly close, move or operate something while a ferret is hidden nearby. Ask a ferret-experienced rescue or specialist to review the setup instead of assuming that ordinary pet barriers will be sufficient.

Build a household routine around that inspection. Check where every ferret is before opening external doors, using appliances or moving furniture, and tell visitors and flatmates which areas must remain inaccessible.

Recheck the setup whenever furniture changes or a new item enters the home. Ferret-proofing must also leave room for an appropriate living environment: the RSPCA recommends secure resting areas, suitable toilet access, ventilation and opportunities for exploration. Blocking hazards should support those needs, rather than leaving the animals permanently confined to a cramped space.
